I'll hopefully get to this within the next few days. Queen of Heartstalk 18:29, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Queen of Hearts Friendly ping about this (even I forgot about it for a while) :) Sohom (talk) 09:41, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta, I completely forgot about this; I'll get to it soon. Thanks, Queen of Hearts (talk) 15:56, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well-written

[edit]
  • Throughout his career he served as a police superintendent in Barrackpore, Howrah, and Murshidabad uses an Oxford comma, but the rest of the article doesn't
 Done Sohom (talk) 23:08, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Infobox spells the city he was born in "Calcutta", while the body spells it "Kolkata". I don't know what the guidance is on Indian place names like these, but it should be consistent
Done, switched to Kolkata which is the officially recognized spelling Sohom (talk) 23:08, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Born in 1961 in Kolkata, Mitra was educated at St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata, Presidency College, Kolkata and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, completing his BA, MA and M.Phil opaque initalisms that create an WP:EGG issue
 Fixed Sohom (talk) 23:08, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • In 2015, he helped restore the Police Training School which had previously served as one India's first mental asylumIn 2015, he helped restore the Police Training School which had previously served as one of India's first mental asylums or something along those lines
 Done Sohom (talk) 23:08, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • He is credited to have started the Chandradeep Mela in Hariharpara, an area known for its communal violence which helped stabilize the atmosphere – the communal violence helped stabilize the atmosphere? this sentence doesn't make sense
    • (ah, reading it again, I now understand – there should be a comma at the end of "an area known for its communal violence" and the article should clarify what type of thing the Chandradeep Mela is. a community center? a group?)
      • (also consider linking communal violence)
        • Added the comma, clarified and wikilinked communal violence

Verifiable

[edit]
  • lead and infobox say he was born 16 December 1961, but the body just says "1961"
 Fixed Sohom (talk) 23:08, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • tidy cites aren't a GA requirement, but cite 3 has "MP, Team" as the author and cites 3 and 16 have a website as the "work" (should be changed to "Millenium Post" and "India TV" respectively) and the article is inconsistent on if works are linked
  • Spotcheck
    • Ref 3 ("Soumen Mitra becomes new Kolkata Police Commissioner"):
      • none of Born in 1961 in Kolkata, Mitra was educated at St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata, Presidency College, Kolkata and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi(→), completing his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy. A history graduate, he qualified for the Civil Services examinations and was inducted into the Indian Police Service is verified by this or cite 4 AFAICT
That's on me, I should double checked the previous work done by other editors. Added two cites that back up the facts.
      • Later, he was also put in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department of the West Bengal Police isn't verified by this or cite ten
        • The two sources mention he was the ADG (Additional Director General) which is the highest office of the CID (criminal investigation department). While it's not explicitly mentioned, occupying the highest office would imply that he was "in charge" of the dept

Miscellaneous

[edit]
  • term start in the infobox has an unnecessary cite; this is already verified in the body
 Done Sohom (talk) 05:05, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • is it necessary to specify the predecessors and successors were IPS officers? Commissioner of the Kolkata Police tells me that they're all IPS, and if Vineet Kumar Goyal wasn't, this is better explained in the body than the infobox
Removed Sohom (talk) 05:05, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
 Done Sohom (talk) 05:05, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Education" and "Alma mater" would be better as {{ubl}} (or {{hlist}} for the former) in the infobox
 Done Sohom (talk) 05:05, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • See also section is unnecessary, the article already links to a list of police commissioners of Kolkata and it's weird to arbitrarily link to one
 Done Sohom (talk) 13:11, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Queen of Hearts: any update on this review? It looks like the last of the comments were addressed about a week ago and I just wanted to check in on this while I've been going through some older reviews. Thanks! Fritzmann (message me) 21:09, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Fritzmann2002, I apologize to all parties involved for how long this has taken, but I just need to finish spotchecking and this can be wrapped up. Thanks, Charlotte (Queen of Heartstalk) 19:20, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No need to apologize and feel free to take your time :) It's been nice to come back from time to time to fix issues that have been identified. Sohom (talk) 04:18, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Status query

[edit]

Queen of Hearts, Sohom Datta, where does this review stand? It's been open for four months now, and coming up on two months since the last posts on this page. Any chance it can get moving and be completed soon? Thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 02:56, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sohom Datta and Queen of Hearts: it's been quite a few months- are you planning to close it any time soon? DoctorWhoFan91 (talk) 08:00, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Second opinion/new reviewer needed

[edit]

I pinged reviewer Queen of Hearts on her talk page, saying that as this was approaching five months since her most recent post, if nothing happened soon I was going to call for a second opinion and/or new reviewer. Her response was, I'm surprised this hasn't already happened, please do so. For the record, I'm pretty sure it just needs a spotcheck. So I'll be setting the status of this review to 2nd opinion, in the hopes that someone will show up and be willing to spend enough time to do a spotcheck and otherwise see whether this nomination meets the GA criteria. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:24, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I saw a request from the @Thebiguglyalien for help. I have glanced over the article. It currently fails 1a, "spelling and grammar are correct". For example, the capitalization in the first sentence is strange, and Soumen Mitra#Literary works has a sentence with no terminal punctuation (also a link to Kolkata Police in the middle of a book title, which is probably a 1b violation).
@BlueMoonset, this ought to be written in Indian English, and I'm unfamiliar with its conventions (e.g., 'M Phil' vs 'M.Phil.' – the article has the former, and I'm accustomed to the latter, but that could be a simple matter of WP:ENGVAR). All of these problems could be solved with a quick copyedit. Do you know anyone, or where we could find anyone, who could do that? WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:15, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WhatamIdoing, Does the current version look better. (There were significant edits in the interim while I was gone) which introduced a ton of jargon and non-neutral/weirdly structured sentences. Sohom (talk) 20:14, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that does look better.
In the category of strictly optional and absolutely non-required details, I notice that the lead is 185 words long. A while ago, I did a survey of FAs for Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section, and most (not all!) of them tend to have longer leads (e.g., 15–25% longer). So I want to say that this lead length is 100% okay as it is, but if you felt like you were being forced by MOS:LEAD to leave things out that you actually wanted to include in the lead, you do have room to expand.
The only thing that confuses me about the lead is why "2001 Kolkata Stock Exchange scam" is italicized. Should that be a Wikipedia:Red link? (Red links are permitted in GAs [also in FAs].) WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:33, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WhatamIdoing I've fixed the italicizing and replaced it with a red-link. Regarding the rest, I did take a look and I don't think there is anything missing from the lede at this moment that needs to be added. Sohom (talk) 14:36, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This sentence in Soumen Mitra#Early life and career:
is confusing because it sounds like the communal violence helped stabilize the atmosphere. Also, "is credited to have started" is not how I'd write this in American English, but that may be correct in Indian English (and this article should use Indian English).
(I made a couple of other small fixes; please review to make sure they're compatible with Indian English.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:50, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've reworded that sentence, the rest of the changes are fine wrt to Indian English. (I believe the major differences is in the numbering systems and the use of the British variants of words + some Indic loan words) Sohom (talk) 00:10, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In Soumen Mitra#Other interests, I don't know who Ramendra Narayan Roy is/was. Usually, we'd add something like "the teacher Ramendra Narayan Roy" or "the politician Ramendra Narayan Roy", but I'm not sure that any simple label is helpful there. (If you don't like my other changes, please improve or revert them. I promise that I won't hold it against you.)
I think that's it for writing (Wikipedia:Good article criteria #1), so my next task will be looking at the sources. I don't expect to find serious problems, but it may take me a while to get through them. WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:07, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Reworded, let me know if it is any better. Sohom (talk) 00:11, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Source review:
The ADG is the higest office of the CID and the person who assumes the role is typically in charge of the CID (barring non-standard incidents). I've clarified that he was appointed as the additional director general in the text. Sohom (talk) 23:24, 23 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't find the source, I've added other sources that talk about the architecture and the mental asylum context. Sohom (talk) 23:24, 23 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • The source cited at the end of the first sentence in ==Other interests== (the one written by Mitra himself) does not directly support the sentence as written. In particular, while it is a primary source showing that he is interested, it does not say anything about whether he is "known in the police force for" that interest. What I suggest: Shortening the sentence to "Mitra is interested in..." or "Mitra has an interest in..." should be a quick and easy fix. Alternatively, perhaps a different source speaks directly to his reputation within the police force, and we could add another source to this sentence.
Shortened the sentence. Sohom (talk) 23:24, 23 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta, you have done a good job, and I have only this short list of concerns. I think we are close to finishing this review with a positive outcome. Please look at these last three bullet points and let me know what you think. Remember that I am trusting you to tell me when you have a different idea or if you think I am wrong, even if it is uncomfortable to say that. WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:25, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
WhatamIdoing, I've gone though and made most of the fixes you mentioned. :) Sohom (talk) 23:24, 23 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, @Sohom Datta, and congratulations on bringing this article up to GA status. WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:50, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
