Poverty in the lead

[edit]

Currently the lead says “remains one of the poorest countries in Europe” but I would like to change that for the following reasons:

1) the second linked article is dubious as both the population and GDP of Ukraine are uncertain

2) as of course a lot of GDP is military, such as weapons production, comparison with other European countries does not tell us much useful as they are not at war

3) not obvious there are 2 links

How about something like: “There is a lot of poverty in Ukraine.” That makes the link obvious for readers who want more detail. Chidgk1 (talk) 17:04, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Poverty is different to GDP per capita. There is also relative/absolute poverty as well as different national poverty lines. It does not seem to be that notably high in Ukraine so probably this is not something for the lead. It may be possible to rephrase this as having the lowest GDP per capita for precision, unless there are plenty of sources that use this exact phrasing when describing the country. The cited sources do not appear to say either that “Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe” nor that “there is a lot of poverty in ukraine.” And these are two different things. Currently the line in the lead says one, but it links to an article about the other.
Ukraine is relatively poor. The Economy section has a statement that “It remains among the poorest countries in Europe with the lowest nominal GDP per capita” with a 2021 source that refers to GDP per capita PPP, and another that “About 1% of Ukrainians lived below the national poverty line in 2019,” although the linked source currently says 1.6% in 2020. Both are much lower than a dozen other European countries I checked at the same source.
The statement in the lead should cite the relevant source and say how “one of the poorest” is defined. It should not link to poverty rate because the sources do not support the country being relatively poor in those terms, and it is a different subject. 142.160.96.197 (talk) 04:23, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Swoonfed and others, regarding poverty in the lead, again. I checked the source provided World Economic Situation and Prospects 2024 to is the poorest country in Europe by nominal GDP per capita, with corruption being a significant issue. I see it talks about how the war in Ukraine impacts global food insecurity, that Ukraine economy is recovering after the initial shock of 2022, but I don't see it talking about poverty being a WP:DUE enough issue for the lead.
I also checked another academic source The Economics of Russia’s War in Ukraine - Google Books on Ukrainian economy, which is not fully available to me, but it does not raises the poverty issue weight enough, too, talking about how the war has impacted global food security, again.
So, do we have a good source for the poverty to be discussed among other factors and giving context and putting a correct weight to it among other factors, so we can take from it? ManyAreasExpert (talk) 09:40, 31 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Good afternoon, I would like to request a review of the section structure in the article on Ukraine. In the forth paragraph of the introduction, it is mentioned corruption remains significant problem. While corruption is an important issue, I have noticed an inconsistency in how it is presented in other countries Wiki pages. For example, according to Corruption Perceptions Index (2023) Turkey has a lower score than Ukraine. However, the introduction of the English Wiki article on Turkey does not mention it in introduction, which most people read. This raises concers about neutraility and uniformity in what way information about Ukraine is given, and how it shapes readers mind, especially in the context of Russias war against Ukraine, and hybrid attacks, espcially intended on engslish speaking countries and audience, which help Ukraine. To ensure consistency and fairness, I propose either, moving the mention of corruption in the Ukraine article to a more appropriate section such as Politics or Economy, where it can be discussed in detail alongside other issues. Alternatively, if corruption is to be included in the introductiory paragraphs according to you, then for neutrality a similar mention should be add to all country articles where for example CPI score is equal or lower than Ukraine's, for exaple Turkey, Serbia, Brazil, Bosnia and others. This would help maintain neutrality and ensure fair corruption related remarks accross different pages or stop giving the negative conotation especially for so called "West" audience which helps Ukraine the most and others. Thank you for your time and consideration. I love Wikipedia and support your values and mission Fromstartospace (talk) 20:24, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
