Question about building category: Hey, I'm a student at NYU looking to create a page for the Paulson Center and wonder what type of building it would fall under. The building is multi-use, as it has student and faculty dormitories, dining halls, study spaces, athletic facilities, and classrooms, so its status is a bit ambiguous. I am working on the page on my sandbox (please excuse the content copied from the Bobst Library page, I am new to wiki editing). I understand the potential for conflict of interest, but hope that my contributions are useful. Also could I know how I would disclose the COI, if that is necessary before submitting the draft for review. FunkyDe (talk) 05:30, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to say I don't think you really have a conflict of interest- it's no different than a customer of Walmart editing about Walmart, or a Catholic editing about the Catholic Church. If you want to disclose that you're a student at NYU anyway, you can write a statement on your user page(User:FunkyDe). 331dot (talk) 09:05, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Let me dodge your question (!), by asking you a different one, which probably comes before categories and other such additional bells & whistles:
Wikipedia doesn't merely catalogue things that exist, they need to be worthy of particular attention. Therefore, is the building somehow notable enough to justify an article in a global encyclopaedia? This is normally (per our general notability guideline WP:GNG) defined as meaning that the subject has been extensively covered in multiple secondary sources that are reliable and entirely independent of the subject. For buildings, there is also a special guideline WP:GEOFEAT, which covers historically significant ones such as those included in a national heritage registry.
If you think this building can meet either of those guidelines, then the process for drafting an article is described in WP:GOLDENRULE.
And if you want to give it a go, there's an interactive wizard at WP:YFA which helps you work through it all, and finally submit your draft for review at Articles for Creation (AfC).

Thanks for the advice. I'm not 100% sure about the notability, now that you mention it. Would student news articles serve as sufficient sources? There's a few of them (123), mostly talking about repeated delays leading up to its final opening. Additionally, on a more general level, what are some good ways to find good articles to work on that are "local"? Just realizing that it's a lot more fun to add places I know about that are missing from Wikipedia. FunkyDe (talk) 10:03, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
