Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

[edit]

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Your GA nomination of Carrie (novel)

[edit]

The article Carrie (novel) you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Carrie (novel) for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Lucid (Asa album)

[edit]

Let me start by saying this. Do not review any other article I nominate for GA. Your review was lackluster to say the least. You didn't bother looking at the previous GAN done by other editors. If you actually went through the previous GAN carried out by other editors, you would see that all of their comments were addressed. Your claim about the article having grammatically issues is straight out false. The editor who edited the page has created several good articles related to Kanye West. For your info, this particular statement (the album's title depicts the place where Aṣa was at the time of the album's release) was suggested by the editor who last reviewed the article. I am going to take the article to GOCE and renominate it. I'll continue nominating it until it passes GAN. I am not going to allow your lackluster opinion stop me from bringing the article GA status.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 16:28, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your accusation of close phrasing is false. I summarized the sources in my own words. A copyright detector test was also performed on the article by previous editors. You are the only editor who has falsely accused me of copying source material. The previous editors who reviewed the article have way more experience than you and didn't bring up this false accusation. Like I said earlier, don't review any other article I nominate for GA.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 19:57, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Versace1608: As per WP:PARAPHRASE, close paraphrasing is the "superficial modification of material from another source" and is considered plagiarism. Per WP:GACR, copyright violations is one of a few scenarios where an article can be failed without further review, and I did provide you with evidence of significant close paraphrasing in my spotchecks and my rationale for closing the review, which is that I want to give you time to fix the plagiarism before renominating it. Also worth noting that close paraphrasing is one of the few methods of plagiarism that cannot be detected by the copyright detector, meaning it does not matter that prior reviewers used it. Lazman321 (talk) 20:37, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Stop talking nonsense and show me evidence of the so-called plagiarism. You've wasted my time and this will be my last response to you. I thought you were a serious editor.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 21:21, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Versace1608: Okay, I feel telling me to "stop talking nonsense" and that you thought I was a "serious editor" feels like your personally attacking me. If you want evidence, here it is. Lazman321 (talk) 21:50, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you feel like I'm personally attacking you, report me to an administrator; it's as simple as that. Your review was lackluster. You sat there nitpicking the article simply because you do not want to pass it. Just because you claim that it I closely paraphrased the source doesn't mean that it is true. Your criticism of the article is your opinion and not a fact. Previous editors who are more experienced than you did not tell me this. They actually took the time and gave a detailed review of their critique. You, on the hand, looked at a few sentences and concluded that I plagiarized the entire article. Like I said earlier, do not review anymore articles I submit. I am going to resubmit the article this weekend and someone else will review it. The only downside is that the article will be at the bottom of the page. You've wasted my time here. Before you waste anyone's else time, make sure you refrain from reviewing articles you perceived to be closely paraphrased. The fact that the Lucid (Asa album) article passes Earwig copyright plagiarism test doesn't mean anything to you. Nitpicking one or two sentences in an article and concluding that the entire is plagiarized is what's important to you. Someone should give you a barnstar for being an expert in spotting close paraphrasing.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 22:14, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations, Lazman321! The article you nominated, Bejeweled (video game), has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Gog the Mild (talk) via FACBot (talk) 12:05, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven

[edit]

On 20 January 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Efrim Menuck, the guitarist of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, likened the composition of Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven to film editing? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven. Hi Lazman321, thanks for participating in the WikiCup. You recently submitted Template:Did you know nominations/Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven for DYK points, but unfortunately it is not eligible for DYK points because it was nominated to DYK as a newly promoted GA. I know this can be disappointing, but Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring#Did you know? states that only newly created or expanded DYKs are eligible for DYK points. The rules specifically exclude DYK submissions from receiving points if their appearance on DYK is solely because the article was a newly promoted GA. Hi @Lazman321:, I've got a follow-up question about the album and generally about wiki's approach to untitled songs. My streaming service, bandcamp, and albumoftheyear.org lists songs in "Pop" ad "pop" with their ordinal number (e.g. 5th song is "Pop 5"). However, discogs and wiki page lists them all as just "untitled". Do we change to the "Pop 1, Pop 2, etc" approach or, alternatively, leave a note explaining the disperency between streaming services and, I assume, vinyl/cd liner notes? Hope it makes sense! - LastJabberwocky (talk) 10:23, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page watcher) @LastJabberwocky: I've modified the track listing template to accomodate for those discrepancies.

All tracks are written by Wolfgang Voigt.

No.TitleTitle on digital versionLength
1.UntitledPop 15:13
2.UntitledPop 28:38
3.UntitledPop 37:27
4.UntitledPop 49:31
5.UntitledPop 510:52
6.UntitledPop 69:24
7.UntitledPop 714:37
Total length:65:42

An easier way to address this would be to add a note explaining that the titles are listed "Pop 1-7" on the digital version. — 🌙Eclipse (she/they/all neostalkedits) 21:57, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! [edit]

Just thought I would give you a heads up, I am considering reviewing your GA nomination for the lost film El Apóstol. Before doing so, I did a little digging for some additional sources (One can always use more), and I found quite a few that have small tidbits of information you already have and also some you do not. If sources repeat the same information, that ensures things are well documented by additional sources. Here are the sources I found, take your time:

WikiCup 2025 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.

Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:

In addition, we would like to recognize Generalissima (submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.

The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
