Question from Tsundokuboi (02:11, 24 January 2025)

[edit]

Hey! I've been making a few edits this week for the first time, a lot of it has been expanding articles about Japan that have more information on their corresponding pages in Japanese. I was wondering if I should be citing these in some way that I haven't been doing? --Tsundokuboi (talk) 02:11, 24 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Tsundokuboi: Hey, it would be helpful it you sent specific edits you'd like reviewed. The one I randomly clicked on looked OK, although I'm not personally someone who gets too in the weeds with citations. However, you should add language=ja to indicate the references are non-English. If your understanding of Japanese is strong enough, it's helpful to add a translated title, as well as quote the section that is being referenced, (see WP:FQ) including a translation. This helps verifiability, but is not required by any means. Also, a reminder that "English-language sources are preferred over non-English ones when they are available and of equal quality and relevance" (WP:NONENG).

Question from Samcaty (17:40, 7 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I want to create a Wikipedia page for myself using secondary sources, written in a neutral point of view. I believe I'm notable. My name is Agbolade Omowole --Samcaty (talk) 17:40, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Samcaty: Hello, creating an article about yourself (WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY) is strongly discouraged, but if you still decide to, you should first create a draft and familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's core principles, especially WP:GNG and WP:N.
I see you've already started a draft, you can submit it for review when you think its ready. One immediate thing you should do is turn your bare references into proper citations using templates like {{cite web}}.
Thanks — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 05:32, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Assistanttobvdk (17:44, 7 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello! I am trying to figure out how to edit my employer's page. It is a longish story, but I had made some edits and didn't realize I needed to add commentary. The account I had been using was permanently blocked due to COI issues. I have a new account and plan to do it right this time! I would appreciate guidance on how to make transparent and correct edits. I honestly don't know where to start and am concerned I will inadvertently break the rules again. I really didn't intend to do it wrong in the first place, but it was my fault for not reading up on it more before I did it.

My employer wants some pretty simple edits and to add commentary to refute some of the negative narratives. We also want to add links to press.

Can you help me? --Assistanttobvdk (talk) 17:44, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from HolidaySea5258 on File:The Exorcist 1971.jpg (03:18, 16 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello,how,do,I,create,a,citation?the, excerceist.? --HolidaySea5258 (talk) 03:18, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @HolidaySea5258:. Can you clarify your question? You cannot create a citation to a file / an image. A citation links to a source, like a website or book. For help on creating one, try reading Help:Referencing for beginners. Let me know if you have further questions. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 05:35, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mane Vidvesh (08:03, 20 February 2025)

[edit]

hello, sir/mam "perfectsoundwhatever" Vidvesh here!, i just created my account and i want to know more about wiki and looking forward for some editing work. And i have a small doubt is there a way i can create a wikipedia page of myself or like my father. I know that i can just this question in google or some thing but just wanted to talk. :) --Mane Vidvesh (talk) 08:03, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, @Mane Vidvesh: Nice to meet you. A good place to start learning about Wikipedia is its five core principles. You should also read some important policies which govern how to edit, like WP:N and WP:NPOV. Also, refer to Wikipedia's manual of style for grammar/formatting concerns.
Creating an article about yourself (WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY) or someone you know (WP:COI) is strongly discouraged because you introduce biases by writing about people you know. Have reliable, reputable newspapers or websites covered you or your family in depth? If not, the article you create will likely be deleted. If you would still like to create an article, you must create a draft. Do so at the WP:Article wizard.
Thanks — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 05:41, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TheAbsolutist (03:13, 23 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello, I would like to know about dos and don't about editing an article, what could be edited and what couldn't be, any rules we have to follow? how does the community react to our edits, and few tips to get the sources as accurate as possible. thank you. --TheAbsolutist (talk) 03:13, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for reaching out.
Wikipedia's core principles are well-summarized at WP:5P. I would recommend clicking around and giving those pages a read, like WP:NPOV, WP:NOT, WP:V, and WP:N. Generally, anyone can edit any article. Sometimes, there are restrictions placed to prevent vandals, but you can request your changes on the talk page.
My 2 cents is that you can get a good sense of Wikipedia's "rules" by looking at similar articles and copying their structure/grammar/etc. But generally, those policies above are the main things you should be aware of. No worries if you make a mistake, people are generally friendly and point to what went wrong. Don't be afraid to make changes that you see as improvements, they can always be undone (WP:BOLD).
For accurate sources, I recommend consulting source lists like WP:RSP since they are summaries on past discussions by the community on sources. Generally, books with legitimate publishers and newspapers are reliable. Journal articles in peer-reviewed journals are great too. For websites, look for editorial oversight, the authors being reputable in their field, the website being established, or past consensus from editors that it is reliable.
Let me know if you have any other questions. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 05:49, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Rontera526 (03:56, 2 March 2025)

[edit]

Hi! just made an edit to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_B._Strimple about adding date of death with cited reference. Can you please check if it is correct? --Rontera526 (talk) 03:56, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry for the late reply, and thanks for your contributions. It's mostly good, a few issues that were cleaned up by other editors (but this is the iterative nature of Wikipedia). It's better to fill out a reference with the title, date, author, etc. instead of just having a bare URL. Dashes are preferred to hyphens for ranges (see MOS:DASH). References should come after the punctuation (WP:REFPUNC). Not sure about the reliability of the source. A reputable newspaper is preferred, but on first glance, the source you gave seems OK. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 06:56, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from AWestbrook85 (22:58, 19 March 2025)

[edit]

How can i add a new page about a topic? --AWestbrook85 (talk) 22:58, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@AWestbrook85: Hi, best place to start is to create a draft and read WP:Your first article. You can submit the draft via the articles for creation process. Familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's core policies: WP:5P is a good place to start. Most importantly, you should understand WP:N, WP:RS, and WP:NPOV. Question from Emasterbuild (15:03, 8 April 2025)

[edit]

I've had a edit that got destroyed when I tried to submit, not it was blocked, but when was going through the submit process the edits I had made disappeared and was replaced with the page as it was before I could finish. I spent a bunch of time on the edit, is there any chance Wikipedia has some sort of save of that work? I kind of don't want it to have been for nothing. --Emasterbuild (talk) 15:04, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Emasterbuild: Hi, I'm not sure what happened in this case. If someone made an edit in the time it took you to submit, it's called an edit conflict, but your progress is still saved. You just have to merge it.
Unfortunately, Wikipedia does not save in-progress edits. I'd recommend submitting edits more often (you could work in a sandbox, too) or doing something else to save edits. Personally, I will either stash in-progress edits on my desktop notepad or CTRL C every once in a while so the text is saved somewhere. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 06:46, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! That makes sense. Emasterbuild (talk) 16:56, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sleepymedqueen (01:51, 14 April 2025)

[edit]

What is the credibility of Wikipedia, considering that anybody can edit a page? --Sleepymedqueen (talk) 01:51, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Sleepymedqueen: Hi, thanks for the question. Wikipedia does not consider itself to be a reliable source. SeeWikipedia:Academic use. In my personal opinion, Wikipedia is usually accurate, but has a lot of mis/disinformation. One can develop an eye for what to look for. But generally, Wikipedia is not very credible, and readers should fact-check statements before using them (especially academically). But its still a very useful resource, once you understand its limitations and how to use it correctly. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 06:27, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Carlos Ferreira (Oficial) (00:33, 15 April 2025)

[edit]

--Carlos Ferreira (Oficial) (talk) 00:33, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Carlos Ferreira (Oficial): Hello, sorry, I do not speak Portuguese. You might find more useful results at the Portugese Wikipedia or at the WP:Embassy.
From translating your message, I can give a reply, which you can hopefully translate back. Anyone can edit Wikipedia and having an account gives you a couple advantages over editing without one. That's the main purpose of making an account and becoming an editor. Feel free to begin contributing wherever you see fit. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 06:33, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Shadow jinn (09:28, 18 April 2025)

[edit]

How can I get a person to be known --Shadow jinn (talk) 09:28, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Shadow jinn: Hi, not sure what you mean by "known". If you're talking about being able to create a page for them, you have to show they are notable. Essentially, reputable sources should have written about the person in-depth. but there's a lot more to it. Would you like me to go more in detail? — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 06:34, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SwitchFlip08 (02:09, 25 April 2025)

[edit]

How does, like, linking articles and stuff work? I'm seeing stuff being just "whatever" but I'm also seeing [[whatever|whatever], and then there's those exponent looking things, and I'm very confused. --SwitchFlip08 (talk) 02:09, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@SwitchFlip08: Hi, thanks for asking. So you can check out Help:Linking but I'll summarize. A normal link [[test]] links to the page "test" and displays test. A barrelled link [[test|123]] links to "test" but displays as "123": like 123. The exponent things are citations and usually link to references/notes. The distinction is that these link within a page, usually to a bottom references section, not to other pages. Read more at Help:Citations. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 06:42, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
