Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Angola 2000 Didier R-14F41E.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 17:28, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I now regret that I forced you into revealing your identity. I've stretched WP's rules a little (though I think keeping to them in spirit) and have deleted the discussion. -- Hoary (talk) 14:46, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images of book covers

[edit]

is is not clear to me how I shall upload some pictures of books covers which I am the author. The following were deleted== Possibly unfree Image:Rwanda_EnfantsPrisonniers_cover.jpg ==, == Possibly unfree File:Cover Bauern.jpg ==. What shall i do do now ? How do I fill the files and upload them ? I still have a book cover with mention == Possibly unfree File:Cover Afrique.jpg ==. What and how shall I clear my situation?Silvanuche (talk) 11:40, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not surprised that you're confused. This matter is indeed confusing.
Let's suppose that (as is common for photo books) most of the front cover is taken up by a photograph, and that the photographer tells you that he gives his permission for the image of the cover (of course including his photograph) to be uploaded.
This actually means nothing in WP, for at least two reasons. One of them is that the design of the cover as a whole can be assumed (unless there is clear evidence to the contrary) to be copyrighted by the publisher.
Although alternatives are imaginable, I'll assume that the cover design is, and remains, copyright (and is not copyleft, let alone Creative Commons or GFDL). So what should you do?
Let's look at a successful example: File:Kazama-yuubari-376.jpg. This is a smallish reproduction. (Actually it's still unnecessarily large, large enough to attract criticism by some fanatical copyright hawk. In principle, it should be no bigger than what's needed to appear within the article in which it's used.)
I was the uploader of this image, and I'm saying in File:Kazama-yuubari-376.jpg that the design is presumed to be copyright, and incorporates a photograph that's presumed to be copyright. I then explain how its use within each specific article in which it appears is fair use under US copyright law.
In fact it appears in only one article, Kensuke Kazama. In principle I should discuss the book or its cover design in the text of that article; I don't, but at least I do mention the book.
Try something similar for one image, and keep that file on your watchlist. If somebody then comments on it either there or here, respond quickly. If there's an objection that you don't understand, let me know (although I am no expert in copyright matters/procedures). Once you think you understand how this works, consider adding additional images: you'll see that I have successfully done this for Hiroh Kikai, as one example.
Note that the "fair use" claim won't work with any Wikipedia other than English; don't bother trying it in French-language Wikipedia, for example. -- Hoary (talk) 14:46, 15 January 2010 (UTC) ... revised Hoary (talk) 02:53, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, there are many obsolete warnings on this talk page of yours. You're very welcome to remove these (or anything) from your own talk page if you wish to do so. -- Hoary (talk) 02:43, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Link/footnote formatting

[edit]

Here's how to format a footnote that links to a web page:

Author, "[http://www.website.fr/quelque/chose.html Article title]", Website Title, date. Accessed date.</ref>

The date that you write after "Accessed" is the date when you viewed the page.

I started to reformat the footnotes of Didier Ruef for you in this way, but I'm afraid I lack the time to continue. (I'm busy with Magnum Photos, etc.) -- Hoary (talk) 13:44, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Test2Didier.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If you think that your page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. -- ТимофейЛееСуда. 19:20, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
