Restoring unreferenbced categories

[edit]

Restoring of unreferenced information is violation of Wikipedia policies on verifiability --Altenmann >talk 20:36, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are you serious? There are so many unsourced things on wikipedia. It seems like you don't actually want assistance in determining whether this category should exist. Mason (talk) 00:12, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

LGBT check in category header templates

[edit]

Hi, thanks for Template:People by nationality and century category header/core and any others like it for category changes from LGBT to LGBTQ. I think all those categories have been renamed now, so the template code can be simplified to LGBTQ only. As you are up to speed with this, please would you trim the obsolete LGBT checks? This will remove backlinks to the old categories, simplifying the task of scanning for any remaining backlinks that need updating. – Fayenatic London 15:14, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely, I can go through an simplfy it to remove those checks because I agree we don't need them now Mason (talk) 15:15, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that worked quickly. I'm glad I asked you to do it, because I had misread the code and would have messed it up! – Fayenatic London 16:25, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing! It's not the most readable code right now, but that is on my todo list so that other lovely people can safely make changes. The biggest pressing mystery is that I need figure out why the science occupation really doesn't want to behave with showing non-diffusing child categories. Notice

The article List of museum wikis has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sources about the topic as a group, no independent sourcing in article at all, fails WP:LISTN

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Error in template

[edit]

Hi Mason. There seems to be a duplicate parm error in Template:Occupation by nationality and century category header. Editing Category:1st-century Byzantine bishops gives this error:

Warning: Template:Occupation by nationality and century category header (edit) is calling Template:Occupation by nationality and century category header/outercore with more than one value for the "Title_continental" parameter. Only the last value provided will be used.

However, editing the template doesn't show the error.

It's causing many errors on Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls.

I don't understand the complex coding in the template, so I'm hoping you can sort it out. Thanks. Davemck (talk) 15:23, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know! It looks like I accidental used Title_continental for a 2nd time rather than Title_country, like I had intended. Mason (talk) 21:42, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Executiones

[edit]

So the Category:Executioners by nationality has at least 14 of its 19 sub-cats with less than 3 articles. I am not sure we need to subdivide it by nationality at all. The category Czech executioners is one we really ought to scrap. The one article is on a person who was an executioner for the Kingdom of Bohemia when it was under the rule of the Habsburgs. He is already in 17th-century Bohemian people, so just upmerging to executioners would probably be the best solution in this case. The largest Category is English executioners with 33 entries (all 4 articles in the sub-cat are in the parent cat). Although the Soviet with maybe 28 articles between the parent and the 2 nested sub-cats (I did not check for overlap) and the American with 18 might be Wirth keeping. Only the German with 9 seems worth keeping beyond that. However it is an odd mix of Nazi war criminals and government executioners under the Kingdom of Prussia, so considering executioners are agents of the state it may be unwisely conflating unlike things.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:29, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hope you're doing okay (re. the ArbCom case)

[edit]

Hi! When I emailed ArbCom with the relevant diff, I didn't want it to be public at first since I wasn't sure if you were okay with being put in the spotlight and having this event brought up again. While CaptainEek did email you, I thought it could still be good to make sure the whole situation isn't being too uncomfortable for you. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 16:18, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for checking in! I'm doing really well. It's really validating to see the community saying, yep that is indeed creepy and shouldn't be acceptable. SMasonGarrison 16:21, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Regarding Category:19th-century Greek sportsmen,

  • |living=no is not needed/wanted on cats - there are no visual/categorization changes to the page with or without it, and
  • |category=y is being used incorrectly - |category= should only be set to no for demonstration or testing purposes to remove automatic categorization (incidentally, |category= was recently removed from {{WikiProject Biography}}).

Regarding {{WikiProject Men's Issues}}, are we tagging all men cats with that, or only if a corresponding women cat exists, or some other criteria?   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  14:13, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! So for context, I think that these might be the default in awb for the kingbot plugin. Honestly, regarding men's issues, I haven't thought deeply about it, so we should probably check out the project to see what active folks over there have been doning. Attitudes

[edit]

I just have a comment about a comment about a comment, and I trust that you will sort of understand. I read the comment that says that men the age of Tony (which I am) sometimes don't view women as their equals. I was raised by two World War Two veterans, and my father demanded that women be treated with respect, because his father had demanded that women be treated with respect. I associated with and dated women who demanded to be treated as equals, because they were equals. But it occurs to me that a quantitative psychologist would know better than almost anyone else what percentage of men that age have regressive attitudes about women. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:03, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your comment about a comment about a comment. :) And I think that it's attitudes like yours (and your father's, mother's etc) that are why we can have this kind of conversation on Wikipedia at all. The fact is that I'm feeling extremely supported by folks of all generations and genders. (My academic advisor is about Tony's age, and has been just wonderfully supportive in my career. So rest assured, I know that Tony's anomaly.) SMasonGarrison 21:24, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

YOu added Boris Andreyev (cosmonaut) into Category:20th-century explorers from the Russian Empire.

Your user page says you are assistant professor of quantitative psychology . Please do not mess in the areas where you have negative knowledge, such as Russia (cosmonauts in Russian Empire is alt-history sci-fi).

Please revert all your moves to this category. --Altenmann >talk

Ummm, excuse me? How is my profession relevant to this conversation? SMasonGarrison 23:45, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is no connection between your editing choices and your occupation. Altenmann, don't attack other editors because you have an editing disagreement. Unless there are editing restrictions, editors can edit on any subject they want. I'm sure that you don't just edit articles that are reflective of what you do for a living. Liz Read! Talk! 00:08, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz: It is not about occupation, but about the declared level of knowledge. Yes there is connection, when someone if aggressively editing in the area they demonstrably have no knowledge. Putting a Soviet cosmonaut into a category of Russian Empire (!) and then edit warring is unbecoming of an assistant professor. I can take it easy on a teenager and patiently explain their errors, but a professor should have known better and be ashamed of aggressive edit warring. Good bye to you all, happy screwing up Wikipedia. --Altenmann >talk 00:49, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
