ICM

[edit]

Hi Suslin, you can check the category talk pages (I suspect you are duplicating some of my effort) where I have already listed the speakers upto 1912. The format in the ICM list is odd and it took me quite a while to figure out some of the names. Solomon7968 18:04, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hi there! Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

I noticed your recent edit to Leach Botanical Garden does not have an edit summary. While your contributions are helpful, not providing an edit summary creates extra work for editors reviewing recent changes, an article's history, your editing history, etc. in determining whether your edit is likely vandalism or helpful. Please help collaborate. You were reminded about no edit summaries in 2010. If you continue, you are editing disruptively.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. Thanks! —EncMstr (talk) 16:09, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Saw your last comments at David Eppstein's talk page. Please note that while you do decent work here, your peculiar approach to signing is hindrance to effective communication. You are long enough here to know to use the four tildes ~~~~ for signing.

Autopatrolled granted

[edit]

Hi Suslindisambiguator, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the patroller right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Wikidata

[edit]

I see you have been using the {{translated page}} template for some articles you create (most of them translated from their German counterparts made by Claude J). While that is ok for our attribution/licensing requirements, I have some small concerns:

  • Can you consider using the edit summary, say, translated from the German version, in the first edit/the edit in which the enWP articles get created? Most of our editors will find that more useful while looking in page history.
  • The pages you create are not getting linked via Wikidata. This is actually more serious than my first point. We are already lagging behind deWP in ICM speakers/AMS fellows (mostly again due to the efforts of Claude J). The pages should be linked to Wikidata by following the "Edit links" option in the bottom-left of any page. Solomon7968 15:03, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for what you did at Shinzo Watanabe, just as I expected . I wrote a note at the list article talk page (about syntax, grammar etc.) and implemented that at Shinzo Watanabe (check the most recent edit). The goal is to link using the User:Edward/Find link tool. Please do notice. Solomon7968 02:35, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

[edit]

Thank you for your recent articles, including Shinzo Watanabe, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:23, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi, I see what you are trying to do with this edit but it breaks the harv linkage to the full reference. I will leave you to fix the problem. Keith D (talk) 14:19, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you recently made an edit to Francisque Sarcey in which you included In which you enter

  • *{{EB1911|Sarcey, Francisque|volume=24|page=208}}

Which due to recent changes produces errors if an unnamed parameter is used. This is how all the standard citation templates behave, so it makes scence to pass the content of unnamed parameters on to {{cite encyclopaedia}} (around which this template wraps). Instead of using a unamed parameter (which is not and has not been documented for many years) use the named parameter wstitile= (which has been documented for many years) along with title= for articles not on Wikisource.

Without wstitile=

  • Wikisource This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domainChisholm, Hugh, ed. (1911). Encyclopædia Britannica. Vol. 24 (11th ed.). Cambridge University Press. p. 208. {{cite encyclopedia}}: Missing or empty |title= (help)

With wstitile=

BTW I made this edit on a phone. It would be helpful if you archived the older content of your talk page (see help:archiving).

EB1911/Cite EB1911 parameter additions

[edit]

Thanks for your many expansions of the occurrences of the [Cite ]EB1911 template. It's important to identify the right source article, and every bit helps. Some comments though:

  • When there's a title parameter with a URL, and it's replaced with a wstitle, it's conventional to remove the URL parameter. It's not visible in the resulting text and has very little value in the source.
  • This resulted in an invalid sentence. Best to check the preview first.
  • In general, since you are presumably referring to the wikisource entry, can you add the volume= and page= or pages= parameter, for completeness?

Thanks again; we're just striving for consistency and completeness. Some more in-depth edits are underway to specifically footnote those sentences that are verbatim copies of EB1911 (using inline ref or {{sfn}} tags), but that is a slow process and your complementary breadth-first updates are welcome.David Brooks (talk) 02:21, 4 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed speedy deletion of Thomas Botfield

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Thomas Botfield (geologist) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Entries from 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia

[edit]

Hi, I know you've done great work before on helping to drastically reduce the number of pages in the "Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating a citation from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica with no article parameter".

There's another one: "Category:Articles incorporating text from the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia with no article parameter" (currently 1665 pages and declining) that needs work and I've started from "A". If you feel so inclined, your input would be appreciated! There's a number of advantages working on articles in this category compared the EB1911 category; all the articles for the CE13 have been created already in Wikisource and the personal articles are "firstname lastname" format which matches Wikipedia. Typically, I've been replacing the use of {{Catholic}} with {{Catholic Encyclopedia |wstitle= |volume=1 |first=|last=}} and filling in the parameters. Thanks in advance. Just follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 as shown and fill in the details

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. Remember that when adding content about health, please only use high-quality reliable sources as references. We typically use review articles, major textbooks and position statements of national or international organizations (There are several kinds of sources that discuss health: here is how the community classifies them and uses them). WP:MEDHOW walks you through editing step by step. A list of resources to help edit health content can be found here. The edit box has a built-in citation tool to easily format references based on the PMID or ISBN.

  1. While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "cite" click on it
  2. Then click on "templates",
  3. Choose the most appropriate template and fill in the details beside a magnifying glass followed by clicking said button,
  4. If the article is available in Pubmed Central, you have to add the pmc parameter manually -- click on "show additional fields" in the template and you will see the "pmc" field. Please add just the number and don't include "PMC".

I had an article on William Kantor at AfC, and crossed wires with your translation. I'd also looked at the German article, so my draft is not so far away from your translation. I took another pass, and made it match what you have a little more closely. The main differences at this point are

  • formatting (sections, infobox, significant pubs broken into books and articles)
  • I left out the Oberwolfach and Ohio State conference organization, which don't seem so notable to me.
  • I have a somewhat different list of significant pubs, which I chose IIRC by looking at citation counts.
  • I left out the disambiguation note at the end about Seligmann Kantor. Now that I look at this, it should probably be handled by a hatnote, which I just added :-).
  • I have more references.

Is there anything there that you don't like? Would you mind if I copied most of my draft over?

I probably should've just moved my draft to mainspace myself, but I'm a bit new here. I appreciate your work in translating articles, particularly the math bios! Russ Woodroofe (talk) 09:41, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for responding so quickly (on my own talk page)! I brought the merged draft over to William Kantor, with a redirect on the draftspace. Take a look and make sure that you're happy with it. Russ Woodroofe (talk) 11:25, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Xuhua He

[edit]

Hello, Suslindisambiguator. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Xuhua He".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

ICM Stockholm

[edit]

Hello Suslindisambiguator,

I am impressed with the enormous amount of editing you did for Wikipedia. Allow me to point out an error (which is probably one of several of the same type), the source of which is the German Wikipedia, and whose relevant pages were translated by you.

The ICM 1962 in Stockholm allowed its participants to make what was called a `short contribution’. There were about 700 of those and while the names and titles are mentioned in the Proceedings, the contributions themselves do no not appear there. It is likely that this was meant to make it easy for participants to justify their expenses at home, but unlike having been invited as a speaker, this is not the kind of thing that deserves mention in the biography of a mathematician.

This kind of error is for example made in the lemma on Tonny A. Springer, where it says:

"In 1962 he was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm (with lecture on Twisted composition algebras) and in 2006 at Madrid (with lecture on Some results on compactifications of semisimple groups)."

His case is remarkable, for he was indeed an invited speaker at the ICM in Madrid (at the age of 80!), but in Stockholm he merely made a short contribution. I do not want to make such changes myself (I am sure you have a better overview).

Similarly, the lemma on Frans Oort incorrectly asserts:

"In 1962 Oort was an Invited Speaker with talk Multiple algebraic curves at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm."

Since you were involved the editing of the ICM speaker list, I take it that there is no need for me to link you to the official ICM site. Beauxartisan (talk) 14:25, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't add links to Google Books from book citations. Instead, add the ISBN. Did you know that if you click the ISBN you can then choose to view the book on Google Books, various Amazon sites, and other places. For example ISBN 978-0393652673. Try it. Linking to Google books indicates a preference which Wikipedia doesn't have. Adding ISBNs is the preference free way to allow interested readers to find more information about the book, on Amazon rather than Google if that's what they prefer. The only time a link to Google Books is appropriate is for old books which don't have an ISBN. Even then, Internet Archive is preferred if the book is available there. Thanks you. Surname of Wilberd van der Kallen

[edit]

Dear Suslindisambiguator,

The surname of Wilberd van der Kallen is not Kallen. That is an entirely different family. See also

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tussenvoegsel

It may be the case that in the Netherlands it is acceptable to write

Kallen, Wilberd van der (1993),

but nowadays that is not the international convention. It must be

van der Kallen, Wilberd

@Bruxton: Primefac recently deleted on the grounds of copyright deletion about 23 blockquotes that I added. I can understand that the blockquotes might violate Wikipedia standards for blockquotes — but I am still baffled how any reasonable person might think that the blockquotes are copyright violations. Consider Wikiquote — there are vast numbers of blockquotes in Wikiquote that are nearer to copyright violation than the blockquotes that Primefac deleted. Furthermore, I think that the offending articles should have been moved to draft space instead of having the blockquotes deleted and also blocking the blockquotes from open review. What is your opinion on this? Suslindisambiguator (talk) 10:58, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article Louise Riofrio has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This is a joke. Not a single publication is peer reviewed, this person has no presence in science except as a self-promotion sideshow

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Ways to improve Erwin N. Hiebert

[edit]

Hello, Suslindisambiguator,

Thank you for creating Erwin N. Hiebert.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

As an APS Fellow he is notable. However, large parts of the page are unsourced. There is a strong possibility that someone will delete everything that is unsourced. Please repair this. Also, the format is different from normal, please revise so it is more readable including things like a scientist infobox and picture.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Ldm1954}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Hi, Suslindisambiguator. Thank you for all your work on creating academic biographies. These are an important, and often-over looked area when compared to other topics on Wikipedia.

However, you must always keep in mind both copyright and Wikipedia's own non-free content guidelines. These can be hard to understand, so feel free to ask me any questions you may have. Wikipedia's rules about non-free content are strict - in many ways, even stricter than copyright law itself. However, it is important that we all comply with these guidelines.

1. When translating articles from other language Wikipedias, we must always follow the instructions at this page. From now on, whenver you translate an article, you must always insert a link to the original source of your text in the edit summary. For example, if you translated a German Wikipedia article to a new Wikipedia page, you should place the following text into your edit summary.

Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:de:Exact name of German article]]; see its history for attribution.

If you ever forget, you can still meet this attribution requirement by following the instructions at WP:RIA.

2. You may not copy-paste external sources into your sandbox. Copyrighted content ins not allowed anywhere on Wikipedia- that includes your sandbox. If you want to copy-paste an external source so you don't loose it, you can use a word processor on your own computer.

3. You may not closely paraphrase or plagiarise content from your source when you are writing a Wikipedia article. You may only take facts, not creative language. This can be hard to figure out. For now, please take this course. It was made by the Wikimedia Foundation for students, but it is a well-written course that you would learn a lot from.

Thank you for reading this. Please let me know if you have any questions, or ask at the WP:TEAHOUSE. It's billed as a help desk for inexperienced editors, but the editors there can answer questions from anybody. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 08:06, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You have an open CCI, was that not enough for you to understand that you can't violate copyright? We very likely may have to expand the CCI to include your current contributions. I'm sorry but, until you show us that you really understand what GreenLipstickLesbian has outlined above, I don't think you should be editing. The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 14:59, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Given that I just had to revdel a a copyvio, all contributions need to be examined. -- Whpq (talk) 21:27, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Whpq, I had a feeling when I warned them last month that they still didn't understand copyright. Suslindisambiguator, we've given you chances to stop and try to fix what you're doing wrong, and you've showed us again that you clearly don't understand. I'm sorry but until your CCI is finished, I don't think you should be unblocked. The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 21:50, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Suslindisambiguator. Thank you for your work on Subir Sarkar. Another editor, Ldm1954, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:

The first long paragraph on his career cites as a source his own CV. We need to have other, independent sources. For instance, a link to his PhD, prior announcements of his appointments etc. In principle the whole 1st paragraph of his career could be deleted as unverified.

You already have a CCI investigation open, and now you've added copyrighted material when creating Frances K. Hutchinson Medal. -- Whpq (talk) 21:26, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, all accusations of copyright violation against wikipedia edits that I have made are incorrect. It seems to me that the lists of recipients and citations (although perhaps I should have used quotation marks for the citations) that I used for the Frances K. Hutchinson Medal are well within the standards of fair use. Are there any lawyers among Wikipedia editors that can give their opinions? https://copyrightalliance.org/faqs/what-is-fair-use/Suslindisambiguator (talk)

I'm interested on knowing why you believe that the content you copy and pasted from the website is "fair use". Even then, you have a history of copyvios. Your intent is obviously to copy and paste content from the website into the article whether the content falls under "fair use" or not. The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 22:48, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Consider the following: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Stephen_King . The number of words copied from Stephen King does not seem to me to greatly different from the number of words copied in the Frances K. Hutchinson Medal citations. Furthermore, the citations seem to me to have negligible commercial value. Is copying a list of prize winners "copyright violation"? Why should copying a list of brief award citations be any different than copying a list of Nobel Prize winners or Academy Award winners? Suslindisambiguator (talk)

Wikiquote is not the English Wikipedia so is not really relevant. What is relevant that Wikipedia goes by a stricter standard than fair use. Exceptions for the use of copyrighted material is governed by Wikipedia:Non-free content. Simply putting quotation marks around all of the copied content would not be acceptable either. -- Whpq (talk) 01:43, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"What is relevant that Wikipedia goes by a stricter standard than fair use." Language should not be abused. Instead of accusing me of "violatingg copyright law", I should be accused of "violating Wikipedia policy for copying material from non-Wikipedia websites". Question for Whpg — do you have any legal training whatsoever? Suslindisambiguator (talk)

Wikipedia is not a court of law so my legal education is not relevant. "Copyright violation" is a term used on Wikiedpia to refer to non-compliance with copyright policy, and is generally used this way in dicussions here. You've made you objection to the owrding knwn here, but that does not negate the fact that your edits are no in compliance with policy. -- Whpq (talk) 13:56, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I say: Copyright violation is fundamentally a legal term — I object to Wikipedia editors who define words according to their own subjective standards. "Copying", "plagiarism", and "copyright violation" have specific meanings, although there are similarities in their meanings. I think I now understand Wikipedia policy. Some of my edits involve more copying than the standard Wikipedia policy — but it probably only about 1% of the 2000+ articles under the "Suslindisambiguator" aegis. Suslindisambiguator (talk)
