    Image size

    Enhanced Games logo

    @Gråbergs Gråa Sång: WP:PICSIZE says: "In the case of images with captions, if the image is already smaller than the requested size, then the image retains its original size (it is not enlarged)." {{Image frame}} can place text below the image similar to a file caption.     Is there a rule against using quotations?

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    I am writing to ask whether I am not allowed to use quotations. In this reversion: ( https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=History_of_concubinage_in_the_Muslim_world&diff=1276768616&oldid=1276211878 ) (I am referring to multiple reversions so I use the whole bit. If you wish to look particularly please go into the History page here: ( https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=History_of_concubinage_in_the_Muslim_world&action=history ).) I was accused by one person of using quotations instead of prose. I thought that was absurd so I reverted it (I got blocked for reverting in another page where I went over three and the other person insisted the first person was correct as can be seen here: ( https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Islamic_views_on_concubinage&action=history ).) but he or she insisted and got me blocked. He or she has not cited any rule on Wikipedia so I am assuming there are none but has now even cited me for vandalism here: ( Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism#User-reported ) which Thankfully has not gotten through (In any case, I was not edit-warring.). I am a bit confused because what I wrote was not vandalism. I quoted an academic source, cited it appropriately and kept it short. My style of editing does include a lot of quotes but I try to keep it short. I have had tiffs with other editors but I tend to accept them as they constructively edit (They delete some things but they acknowledge my quotation or addition is accurate and well cited and form it better to suit Wikipedia.). So what I need help in is quotations. If I have not broken a rule then I may go to the vandalism page myself because this is absurd.

    Hello, John Not Real Name, there is no rule against using direct quotations but they should be used sparingly, should be brief and should constitute a small percentage of the prose content in the article. Wikipedia articles should be summaries not quote farms. Wikipedia's goal is to be free content to the maximum practical extent, allowing very limited fair use of non-free content. A quote from anything published in recent decades (95 years in the US and many other countries) is copyrighted and non free. It is policy to limit that usage. Best practice is to summarize and paraphrase such content. A section of an article should never consist entirely or largely of quotations. The best use of brief, attributed quotations is in cases where the language is so unique and creative that it cannot be paraphrased without losing its impact. The complete guidance is at WP:QUOTATIONS.
    One of the editors who reverted you is Diannaa, a long time administrator who is a widely recognized expert on copyright, plagiarism and proper use of quotations on Wikipedia. I trust her judgment. You should too. Cullen328 (talk) 19:19, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Entirely tangentially, there's a way to avoid he or she without needing to know someone's gender in advance: {{gender:user |male version |female version |unspecified version}} chooses which text to display based on the preference they've entered. For example, ''{{gender:Musiconeologist |he is |she is |they are}}'' gives he is. (I don't know how widely used this is—I found it the other day, and rather like it.     hi there. here is a more general question. what would be a good place to ask for feedback from others about a new item, such as an article or a navbox? i know that one good place would be a related wikiproject. would the village pump be okay, for that purpose, such as on the ideas tab? thanks.     Follow up on unconstructive edit subject

    This is a follow up to the unconstructive edit subject a few days ago. I have tried to talk to the Wikipedia editor in question and he has barely spoken to me which I deem disrespectful. What should I do?

    By the way, this is about a 2025 Asian Winter Games edit on the medal table about Uzbekistan and North Korea (both countries had links to back them up being their) and the record amount of countries getting medals. ILoveSport2006 (talk) 22:36, 20 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

    Fob.schools, I think you want the template {{Failed verification}}. There are more templates for "dodgy references" in Category:Inline citation and verifiability dispute templates.     AbchyZa22 you can go to Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion to request restoration of the deleted version of the file. For example see Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion#File:Logo Bormioli Rocco Group.jpg. Then you can click on the file's Export to Wikimedia Commons tab.     I just noticed that the coordinate links on Wikipedia articles about geographical features no longer work. No matter which coordinates I click on, I always get an error message from the ToolForge site. For example, clicking on the coordinates at Jätkäsaari gave this error message:

    Other coordinate links also give this same error message, only the URL in the error varies.

    It seems to be intermittent, TSventon. Really, it worked for me, when I said it did. I tried it again a few minutes ago and it worked near instantaneously -- but then of course I realized that this was probably because I was just accessing some cache.     Citing an Army Court of Criminal Appeals decision

    I am trying to fix one of the citations on suicide of Danny Chen. The citation for "on appeal, the Army Court of Criminal Appeals dismissed...discharging him with a Bad Conduct Discharge" is a bare URL. The link previously led to some sort of court decision. (It now leads to a history page, but thankfully, it has been saved on the Wayback Machine.) I want to fill out this citation, but as I have absolutely no experience with law or legal matters, I have no idea how to cite it. I do not even know which citation template to use.     Toolforge map emergency

    When clicking on the coordinates for various places one does not get to the GeoHack page/portal to various maps like OpenStreetMap or Google Maps. There is an error note from ToolForge.     Using CSS to block CentralNotices

    @Rockfang: "Suppress display of all CentralNotices" is an option at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. It uses MediaWiki:Gadget-HideCentralNotice.js and MediaWiki:Gadget-HideCentralNotice.css. Maybe you would only need the CSS if you don't mind the banner code being loaded without displaying it.     Name Change of "Saturn S series" Article

    Would attempting an article move of the "Saturn S series" article to a hypothetical "Saturn S-Series" article-- given further research fully corroborates the idea that Saturn has always internally referred to the S-Series as "S-Series" (see Talk:Saturn S series#"S-Series", not "S series" for more details, such as references to "Saturn S-Series" and "Saturn S-series" as well as potential inconsistency within Saturn)-- be appropriate or overly pedantic?

    It bothers me to leave an inaccuracy there but I also recognize it probably doesn't hurt much as is.

    Hello, I have created an article on drug bust controversy in Visakhapatnam, it cna be found at the link Draft:Visakhapatnam Drug Bust Controversy, but, it was declined saying, could be notable but this is written like a news article, can someone help me out in re-arranging the article, so it can be published on Wikipedia.     Hello, @Truth Layer 123. Help Desk volunteers give advice, but don't generally assist with writing or rewriting drafts.
    Looking at your draft, the sentence "Visakhapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh is one of the busiest ports in India and a major hub for global trade" caught my eye. In my view, that is an example of something that does not belong in the article.
    Generally, a Wikipedia article should be a summary of what independent reliable sources say about the subject of the article, and very little else. The sentence I've quoted above is cited to a source - but the source does not mention the subject of this article, so it is likely that neither this source, nor any information verified from it, belong in the article (the information should be in the linked article Visakhapatnam Port anyway).
    That is just one example - and the advice I've given is always am atter of editorial discretion, not an absolute. But I hope it will help you undersatnd what the reviewer meant. ColinFine (talk) 16:59, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(I've not checked to see what kind of thing is typically answered there, though.) And you could of course ask the person who reviewed it what they think needs working on.     @Truth Layer 123 Your draft looks promising but I think that the main issue is that it is speculating about an ongoing event, particularly in the "Aftermath" section, with statements like The case continues to unfold.... I think you should confine yourself to what is firmly established from reliable sources. Wikipedia articles can be updated if later findings become available.     Infobox image size

    I can't get "|image_upright=" to work on infobox military conflict. This may well be me being a bit slow. Experimenting, I get it to work fine for me for infobox politician, but not for infobox weapon. Is there an issue? If not, could somewhat walk me through how to resize infobox images?     @Gog the Mild: Infoboxes have different parameters. {{Infobox military conflict}} does not have image_upright. The parameter is mentioned at Template:Infobox military conflict#Parameters 3 but that's the 3rd "Parameters" section and is actually about {{Infobox military operation}} which does have the parameter.     Request to create new categories

    The articleTurkmen needlework needs to be categorized. The Persian version of this page has categories that need to be placed in larger categories. Creating a category is not a problem. But I am afraid that simply translating these categories into English will cause chaos in the WikiEnglish classification system.     Hello and welcome to the Help Desk. You can propose a new article at Requested Articles- but it is backlogged to the point of uselessness; if you believe an article should exist, the best thing you can do is create it yourself. It is a challenging process- but if you believe this professor meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable professor or more broadly a notable person- you should gather independent reliable sources that support any claims about this professor. You may use the Article Wizard to create and submit a draft. I'd suggest reading Your First Article as well. 331dot (talk) 19:44, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Teddyart, please read Wikipedia:Notability (academics) and also the similar guideline for creative professionals including authors. I read the publisher's description of the bear book and it sounds fascinating. But Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and a writing a book scheduled to be published six months from now is not a plausible claim of notability. If the book ends up being widely reviewed, then maybe the book ought to have an article at that time. See Wikipedia:Notability (books).     @Teddyart One problem with finding sources for a potential article is that there is a lawyer with the same name: see Daniel Horowitz. If you could indicate here in this thread what you would consider to be the sources for a biography of the professor, we could advise further.     Vertical formatting

    At Template:Cite web there is a section that starts with: "Most commonly used parameters in vertical format". If I'm using an WP:LDR is it acceptable to use a "vertical format"? Is there a MOS on how to format a citation's parameters? Should parameters be listed in a specific order (i.e. last name should always come before first name)?     Extracting Images from British Museum to Commons?

    For some reason all of my references are not going in my reference section in draft article.

    Hello, I've been making my first article at Draft:Frank Elbridge Webb. I realized a section of mine was deficient and needed significant revisions, but not wanting to disturb the draft article itself I did the revision in my sandbox, User:1brianm7/sandbox. I completed the revision and copy-pasted it, but for some reason all of my references are not going in the reference section. I think it has something to do with referencing references that have already been referenced, but I have no clue how to fix it, having relied on the automatic citation tool.

    (edit conflict) I said at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2025_February_19#Joshua_Sturm_(musician) that the RFD for Joshua Sturm should not have been started as we don't need to delete a redirect for Joshua Sturm (musician) to create an article for Joshua Sturm (alpine skier). If the alpine skier is notable and the musician is not, then the alpine skier will be the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Other opinions are welcome. TSventon (talk) 16:23, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
