Thanks and advice

[edit]

Hey TinaLees-Jones! I've been reviewing some of your articles as part of the new pages patrol process. Thank you for your excellent work!

I noticed a few small things you might want to do differently. First, in date ranges like "Wang Zhongfang (January 1921 – January 14, 2017, Chinese: 王仲方)", you should use an en dash "–" instead of a hyphen "-" (MOS:DATERANGE). Second, when writing about someone who has passed away, remember to use "was" instead of "is" where appropriate. Third, try to add a short description to each article you create – this is very helpful for readers using the search function. Activating the Shortdesc helper gadget will make this easier!

These are all very small things, but given the incredible number of articles you create, I figured it is important to let you know. Thanks again for all of your writing! Toadspike [Talk] 10:18, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I suggest that you write lead sentences in the format of "Qiao Shibo is a Chinese entrepreneur" rather than "Qiao Shibo is an entrepreneur of People's Republic of China". This is more concise; most readers understand China to mean the PRC unless otherwise stated, so that doesn't need to be specified. Toadspike [Talk] 10:35, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I greatly appreciate your advice and assistance. I was previously unaware of the distinction and importance of the en dash and hyphen; I will exercise greater caution with their usage in the future. Thank you, and happy New Year! TinaLees-Jones (talk) 11:09, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi there! It has come to my attention that you have been created China-related articles recently. I have nothing against such additions except for what I hope are minor issues that you may wish to take notes on:

  1. On biographies of be it living or dead politicians, take note of the notability guidelines for politicians at national level and as well as an explanatory essay on politicians at subnational levels. i.e. Chen Guanglin may not qualify under the national level notability as there is currently no mention of him being a delegate at National People's Congress, since the NPC is a legislative body that to some extent are made up of delegates who may be* elected, and it is not clear if his position at provincial level in Anhui accords him that right. WP:NSUBPOL does not have any presumption of notability for most of China's provincial level positions except for the autonomous regions and SARs.
Note: I am not certain if the delegates are being elected at what level though. According to System of people's congress, the election would be indirectly by the lower level, i.e. the people's congress at provincial level electing delegates to NPC?
  1. Why the almost exclusive use of Chinese language sources? I am curious. I understand that there are information which the English language sources do not have, and I do use sources from a range of languages that I understand, including Chinese, in my contributions. However there are topics which may be covered in English sources such as the sanctions on Tianshan Wool Textile, which was added by another editor. While there is no restrictions on the language of sources, I do hope that you consider utilising English sources as well where information is relevant to the topic. Otherwise, it may come across as WP:NPOV or WP:PROMO to some extent.

Aside the above, it is amusing that China Anti-Doping Agency is on English Wikipedia and not on Chinese Wikipedia. – robertsky (talk) 17:09, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your recommendations and will address your problems, respectively:
Chen Guanglin serves as a delegate to the National People's Congress (NPC). In accordance with Chinese tradition, 40-50 delegates from each province participated in the National People's Congress (NPC), and since the 6th and 7th NPC occurred from 1983 to 1993, before the internet era, information about it is exclusively available in printed literature. I especially read that he, together with 42 other delegates, proposed the "Law on Punishment of Waste" (No. 64) in 1984.
Provincial people's congresses typically possess more restricted authority, making it prudent to examine the legislation of autonomous people's congresses, as autonomous areas generally wield far higher powers. Given the scarcity of Chinese parliamentary content in the English Wikipedia, likely under 1%, despite the provinces' populations being comparable to certain European nations, I believe that provincial or municipal parliamentary content should not be prioritized over the national level. TinaLees-Jones (talk) 23:54, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The rationale for utilizing local sources is that when the subject pertains to an individual or organization from a specific country, it is essential to consider the local resources available in that region. This is particularly pertinent for individuals or organizations that existed prior to the advent of the Internet, as it is challenging to convey the historical context of a webpage in English. I typically utilize book sources for the same information. TinaLees-Jones (talk) 00:06, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am delighted to know contributions from other editors regarding the sanctioning of Tianshan Wool Textile (I was unaware of this modification until you mentioned it). However, the accurate reasoning is that a corporation with an extensive history and a sufficiently substantial market share to impact or jeopardize a nation's market (or, alternatively, to endanger its values) will face sanctions — instead of being sanctioned to get attention. It is highly probable that as China's economic momentum persists, an increasing number of firms will be deemed "worthy" of sanctions by the US or UK. TinaLees-Jones (talk) 00:10, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Chen Guanglin isn't the only biography that you have written which may have the same issue. Do revisit the other biographies you have written to ensure that the pertinent information is included.
As for Tianshan Wool Textile, it was to highlight that there may be a perceived promotional drive without the inclusion of the information on the sanction. If it was accidental, there no worries about it. Just keep in mind to search on other mediums where possible. – robertsky (talk) 01:08, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you! TinaLees-Jones (talk) 01:29, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Concerning the Chinese Wikipedia, I attempted to contribute for some time and discovered that the editorial team is quite unorganized (it is possible that current primary school pupils receive little homework, resulting in an overabundance of political passion and a deficiency in language abilities). Certainly, there are several exquisite entries that I will translate into the English Wikipedia in the future. TinaLees-Jones (talk) 00:16, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. To help yourself remember, you may wish to check the "prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box in your preferences. Thanks! Amigao (talk) 03:30, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
