Costello question
[edit]Hey there Rlendog. Do you own a copy of James Perone's Costello book? I saw you cited him on Stranger in the House (song) and thought I'd ask. If yes I was hoping you could help me out. Thanks. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 19:29, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
- I don't own the book. I found it online. Rlendog (talk) 19:57, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
- Damn. How many pages? I was able to preview pages 1 to maybe 20 on google books but that's it. – zmbro (talk) (cont) 20:41, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
- I think I used Google Books and found what I was looking for so didn't check for other pages. You may be able to see something on its Amazon listing. 21:11, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Internet Archive Scholar vs. JSTOR
[edit]Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up. Brookfield Asset Management edit request to revert non-NPOV edits
[edit]Hi Rlendog. I am working to update the article for Brookfield Asset Management, the company I work for. I noticed you are listed at Category:WikiProject Finance & Investment participants and thought perhaps you would be interested in taking a look at an edit request posted by my colleague Mrn helmers. There were some non-NPOV edits recently made to the article which should be reverted. Another editor made some of the requested changes, but I would appreciate if you, a more experienced editor, would take a look at the edit request (which has since been closed by editor Z1720) at Talk:Brookfield Asset Management and revert the edits that you agree are not neutral. Thanks, Mf419 (talk) 13:56, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – April 2022
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2022).
- An RfC is open proposing a change to the minimum activity requirements for administrators.
- Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have the
deletelogentry

rights. This means that those in the Researcher user group and Checkusers who are not administrators can now access Special:RevisionDelete. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928) - When viewing deleted revisions or diffs on Special:Undelete a back link to the undelete page for the associated page is now present. (T284114)
- Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Procedures § Opening of proceedings has been updated to reflect current practice following a motion.
- A arbitration case regarding Skepticism and coordinated editing has been closed.
- A arbitration case regarding WikiProject Tropical Cyclones has been opened.
- Voting for the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines has closed, and the results were that 56.98% of voters supported the guidelines. The results of this vote mean the Wikimedia Foundation Board will now review the guidelines.
New administrator activity requirement
[edit]The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
- Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
- Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Neil Young Archives Volume II: 1972–1976
[edit]Hello Rlendog,
I see you have recently edited "Neil Young Archives Volume II: 1972–1976".
I'm not a registered wikipedia user/editor but I have noticed an error on this page:
"Like a Hurricane", track 1 on disc 9 is listed as "Recorded at Studio, Broken Arrow Ranch, 11/25/1975." However, according to the booklet included in the box set (and other sources including the wikipedia page of the song: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Like_a_Hurricane_(song)) the recording date actually is 11/29/1975.
Maybe you can correct that.
Kind regards,
Gerbrand van der Vooren

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Taxa named by Zhores Medvedev
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Taxa named by Zhores Medvedev indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". [edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. - Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message
[edit]Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:32, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2022
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2022).
- Consensus has been found in an RfC to automatically place RfAs on hold after one week.
- The article creation at scale RfC has been closed.
- An RfC on the banners for the December 2022 fundraising campaign has been closed.
- A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. (T319449)
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 12, 2022 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
- The proposed decision for the 2021-22 review of the discretionary sanctions system is open.
- The arbitration case Reversal and reinstatement of Athaenara's block has been closed.
- The arbitration case Stephen has been opened and the proposed decision is expected 1 December 2022.
- A motion has modified the procedures for contacting an admin facing Level 2 desysop.
- Tech tip: A single IPv6 connection usually has access to a "subnet" of 18 quintillion IPs. Add
/64
to the end of an IP in Special:Contributions to see all of a subnet's edits, and consider blocking the whole subnet rather than an IP that may change within a minute.

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Taxa named by Eugène Boullet
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Taxa named by Eugène Boullet indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! [edit]On 23 January 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Scared (John Lennon song), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that John Lennon believed that the Rolling Stones' 1978 hit "Miss You" was based on a sped-up version of his 1974 song "Scared"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Scared (John Lennon song). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Scared (John Lennon song)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Introduction to contentious topics
[edit]You have recently been editing gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, which has been designated a contentious topic. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Replaceable fair use File:Yesterday's Dreams single label.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Yesterday's Dreams single label.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

It may even still be ambiguous given that ITIS, for one, still uses the old genus, but it looks like ITIS last reviewed that page almost 10 years ago so the newer genus (which is used by the Mammal Diversity Database) is probably good. - Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
- As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.
- Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.
- The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
- Following a community referendum, the arbitration policy has been modified to remove the ability for users to appeal remedies to Jimbo Wales.

- Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
- A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that
[s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment
.
- Special:Contributions now shows the user's local edit count and the account's creation date. (T324166)
- The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming
local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus
. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged tonote when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful
.
- Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

[edit]Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

Taxa named by categories
[edit]What's up with removing these cats from appropriate taxa? - UtherSRG (talk) 12:56, 26 May 2024 (UTC)
- What are you referring to? I have removed some "Taxa named by..." cats from articles listed under the common name to move the category to the scientific name, which is the taxon. Rlendog (talk) 22:17, 26 May 2024 (UTC)
- Ah! Ok. That makes sense. - UtherSRG (talk) 11:46, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- I think that is the latest consensus, although it has changed back and forth a few times. I notice some more popular articles (e.g. lion) do have a "Taxa named by..." category on the page with the common name title. So I will refrain from removing those and just add them as needed to any scientific name articles, including redirects. Rlendog (talk) 16:12, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

Request for unprotection of redirect
[edit]Hallo, you fully protected Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant in 2020. It points to Kobe Bryant. THe page on his daughter has now been re-created at Gianna "Gigi" Bryant, a terrible title which will need to be changed, but please unprotect the redirect so that it can be retargetted to that page. When the page gets moved, the redirect will follow it.
For context, there's been a wide discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red#Can someone good at 'formalizing' help me with the draft for Gianna Bryant?, resulting in the new article, which had been declined at AfC, being rewritten by a very experienced editor, partly to encourage the inexperienced editor who had put a lot of effort into creating a fairly poor draft. The consensus was that developments since the last AfD probably now make her notable.
I went to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Decrease, but then re-read the instructions there and discovered I needed to come here first.
I hope you can help. Thanks. PamD 19:03, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- I unprotected the page. I have no opinion on the new article itself, but if there is a consensus that it is notable and suitable it can be moved to this title. Rlendog (talk) 12:09, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. It only needs to be redirect as it's her rarely-used full name. Will now edit the redirect (if I can - on phone for a few days, which makes some edits almost or quite impossible!) PamD 22:24, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

Replaceable non-free use File:Come See About Me Dodds Label.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Come See About Me Dodds Label.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Thank you.
This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Liance user deleted page and hasn't responded for 10 days
[edit]I made a new page for NZ Composer William Green, but Liance deleted it because he said it wasn't notable. Another user agrees with me that Green is notable because he has an entry in the NZ govt encyclopedia. Could you help? I found you on the recent administrators page. Thank you. Kelly222 (talk) 00:41, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- The article was actually moved to a draft here. So you can continue editing it there and add more sources that would demonstrate notability more clearly, and resubmit the draft for inclusion in main space. Right now the only source in the article that seems to provide substantial coverage of the composer is the first one. If you add one more with that much substance, there may be a consensus to keep it in main space. Generally editors want to see at least 2 and often 3 or more substantial sources. Otherwise, even if the article is accepted in main space, it is likely to get deleted later. Rlendog (talk) 00:51, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

Need a little help
[edit]Hi. I'm posting here what I posted on FormalDude's page. Please forgive me for not being super Wiki-literate yet. I was just looking for some help and noticed that FormalDude isn't an admin so I found your page, Rlendog:
Hi FormalDude. Could you take a look at the NYU Law Review's page? This user "Randykitty" for some reason feels the need to erroneously remove our logo from our page. You reversed him once already last year but he just removed the logo again (for the same reason you'd reversed him) claiming the logo isn't being used by the Law Review. Here is evidence of the Law Review using the logo that's on the Wiki page (that Randykitty will for some reason try to remove again): https://www.instagram.com/nyulawreview/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/nyulr/ https://twitter.com/nyulawreview Nyulrlogo (talk) 21:56, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
[edit]Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Israël
[edit]Does Israel translate to Israël in Dutch? Thatdordrechtguy (talk) 07:52, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- This is not Dutch Wikipedia. It is English Wikipedia. Just because a term that has a page on English Wikipedia happens to have a particular meaning in some other language than English does not mean that we add a note to the page to note that fact. It is basically trivia from an English Wikipedia point of view. Rlendog (talk) 14:09, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Israël is a page on Dutch Wikipedia, so {{R from alternative language|nl|en}} should be used in the redirect page Israël. Thatdordrechtguy (talk) 17:34, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- That redirect would be irrelevant to English Wikipedia. Rlendog (talk) 20:56, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- I agree. This user has done a stack of these non-English redirects, including some mind-boggling silly ones. Given that they are nominally a new user who has hit the ground sprinting, I suspect an LTA (last incarnation as User:91838jeu72737), just not quite enough evidence for an SPI. Yet.
